Course overview

The emergence of the House of Lancaster could have led to a major decline of the English realm, yet it achieved its greatest success against the enemy of France. We will begin by looking at the latter part of Henry IV’s reign, and his struggle with his own eldest son the Prince of Wales, and in particular focus on how that rivalry manifested itself in a competition between Henry’s sons. Thereafter however we will then go on to concentrate on the Agincourt campaign under Henry V and the subsequent consequences of the renewed conflict of the Hundred Years’ War.

Course description

This course will examine how the latter part of King Henry IV’s reign was plagued both by brotherly rivalry, other ongoing dissensions, and the King’s own worsening health. We will look more closely at the complex relationship of the English crown against France, and suggest some motives for their political decisions. Consequently, we will try to clarify as to how the English approached the matter of French allegiance and how that in turn would go on to provide circumstances which would reignite the hundred years war. We will then go on to look at the reign of Henry V and of course his major campaigns, including a detailed analysis of the Agincourt campaign with both its immediate and more long-term consequences. We will also at the same time consider the rivalries and tensions that still remained within the English monarchy itself, and how Henry V then dealt with those problems. We will also pay some attention to the other members of the royal family and relatives such as Henry’s brothers, or the Beauforts, and their ambitions. Further, some consideration will be made of the reforms which Henry also attempted to bring around before his death.
