Philosophy: Reasons, Explanations and Justifications

When people ask why someone does something (for example why they lie) or what the reason for something is (for example for flooding or increased support for a political movement,) what exactly are they asking ? This course introduces you to three philosophical answers to this question. The first is to distinguish types of reason 鈥 鈥榚xplanatory鈥, 鈥榤otivating鈥, and 鈥榥ormative鈥. The second consists in pointing out that there are different reasons for accepting a statement as valid 鈥 truth, rightness (e.g. moral), and truthfulness. The third is to specify criteria for what creates or maintains moral or political justification. The course is intended to help you think more clearly about the 鈥榳hy question鈥 and to bring useful insights to what can be contentious topics.

Literature: English Poetry from Shakespeare to today

The Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley famously said that 鈥楶oets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world.鈥 This course tracks the development of English poetry, from the sonnets of Shakespeare to the contemporary poetry of Jack Underwood, Emily Berry, and Rachael Allen. As well as considering each of the poets in isolation from week to week, we will also use the seven week course to ask ourselves: how has poetry developed through the years, and what has remained the same? As well as considering each of the poets and poems in isolation from week to week, we will also take the opportunity to compare what aspects No previous knowledge of poetry is necessary 鈥 everybody is most welcome!

History: Trade, Empire and Migration in Nineteenth Century Britain

By the second half of the nineteenth century, as a result of an industrial revolution and the growth of trade and Empire, Britain had become 'the workshop of the world鈥, importing raw materials and exporting manufactured goods across the globe. Alongside these developments were great movements of people 鈥 emigration to other countries in search of a better life, internal migration from Scotland and Ireland to England, migration from countryside to towns in search of work, and immigration into Britain from European countries such as Russia, Germany and Italy. Our course will examine the connections between Britain鈥檚 trade, its empire and the migration of people in the nineteenth century.
